The British Rail Class 197[9] is a class of diesel multiple unit passenger train built by CAF, based on its Civity platform. They are operated by Transport for Wales Rail (TfW), split into 51 two-car units and 26 three-car units.

More than half the trains will be assembled in Wales. The brand-new Class 197s and being assembled in Newport. They are due to enter service from 2022 on long-distance services throughout the Wales and Borders network, serving destinations as varied as Holyhead, Fishguard and Liverpool.

Jan 26, 2023 · The Class 197s will sit alongside the 71 brand new trains and tram-trains being built for the South Wales Metro, the first of which has recently entered into passenger service. A total of 148 brand new trains will deliver faster, more frequent and greener services.

Jan 27, 2023 · With modern, efficient engines that feature the most up-to-date technology, the Class 197s have reduced emissions and fuel consumption compared to our current fleet of diesel trains, helping contribute to our target of being carbon neutral by 2030.

Transport for Wales has modified its plans to provide First Class accommodation on 14 of its 77 Class 197 DMUs, opting for an intermediate category of seating instead. The operator will also enhance its catering offer on the new units, including introduction of at-seat ordering.

May 25, 2021 · These new trains will provide enhanced comfort for Transport for Wales (TfW) customers with features such as leather seats (first class), stain-resistant seats and a modern air-conditioning/heating system. The Class 197 trains also come equipped with a smart seat reservations system.
