Jan 15, 2016 · I found a Teac A-4010SL, and I am not sure what to do with it. It is a beautiful machine, and luckily I have nothing in it right now as it sits. I'm not sure it would be worth repairing due to some head wear. There seems to be good documentation on the web for fixing these decks, which is good! Here are issues I notice so far-

The 4010 S was a four-head, two speed (3¾ & 7½ ips) tape deck with a 7″ reel capacity and three separate motors. Like many of the late 60’s Japanese tape decks, it was equipped with auto-reverse functionality (playback only).

Compared to the 1960s versions, the A-4010SL brought SLH tape compatibility, separate bias & eq selectors, slightly different cosmetics and switchable meters (tape or source display) and meters' scale (+3dB) to allow better monitoring when using SLH tapes.

One of the most iconic and recognizable open reel decks, the TEAC A-4010SL is also widely regarded as one of the most well-built. This unit was well-kept, and perhaps a testament to its workmanship, at nearly 60 years of age, needed only a tune-up.

The TEAC A-4010GSL is a two speed, four head, three motor, solenoid operated quarter-track stereo tape deck with auto reversing during playback. It is a modernized version of the A-4010SL.

This tape deck was developed by putting the latest technology into the A-4010 which became a best seller of 200000 units. HD ferrite head is used for the head. The front face of this head is completely shielded with ferrite and molded with hard glass to prevent track crosstalk.

The reel motor uses a 6-pole eddy current outer rotor motor developed independently by TEAC to achieve stable rotation. The head section has a four head configuration with a special head for reverse feed playback to automatically play back and forth four track stereo tapes.
