On 13 February 1931, the Vickers 6-Ton light infantry tank, under the designator T-26, officially entered service in the Red Army as the "main tank for close support of combined arms units and tank units of High Command Reserve".

Though nearly obsolete by the beginning of World War II, the T-26 was the most important tank of the Spanish Civil War and played a significant role during the Battle of Lake Khasan in 1938 as well as in the Winter War. The T-26 was the most numerous tank in the Red Army 's armoured force during the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941.

More than 50 different modifications and experimental vehicles based on the T-26 light infantry tank chassis were developed in the USSR in the 1930s, with 23 modifications going into series production.

The most prolific tank of the interwar and until 1941, was the Soviet T-26. Based in 1930 on the British Vickers 6-ton tank (Mark E) it was successfully copied, then mass produced in three main models until 1941, above 10,000 units, making single-handedly the Soviet Tank force the world's largest at the time.

After its victory in the Russian Civil War, the Soviet Red Army produced around 125 T-18 tanks, an improved copy of the aforementioned Renault FT, but with a larger turret and improved suspension.

Finnish Army took into its own use 42 tanks of T-26 model (apparently flame-thrower tanks included) captured during Winter War. At least 20 of these 42 tanks were T-26B. From tanks captured during Continuation War and taken to Finnish use 65 were apparently T-26B tanks. These tanks saw extensive combat use with Finnish Army in 1941 - 1945.
