The latest versions of this missile have a tandem HEAT warhead to defeat MBTs fitted with explosive reactive armour.

Mar 7, 2025 · The T-72M1, T-72M1M, T-72M1V, T-72M1K and T-72MP are upgraded variants with improved armor incorporating composite armor plates and Kontakt-1 Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA). T-72M1M produced by the Soviet Union was similar in terms of performance to the Red Army's T-72B tank.

Originally called T-72M1M (Obiekt 184), this is an export derivative of the T-72B. In the T-72S version, the tank is fitted with the 9K120 Svir missile system.

The T-72M1 (Germany) was the final tank delivered to East Germany by the Warsaw Pact during the 1980s, with the intention of it becoming their new spearhead in case the Cold War escalated into a full-scale world war.

Both the T-72M and T-72M1 feature the standard hull protection for early T-72 variants: a composite "sandwich" array in the upper glacis, composed of steel plates around glass textolite.
