The T-64 is a Soviet tank manufactured in Kharkiv, and designed by Alexander Morozov. The tank was introduced in the early 1960s. It was a more advanced counterpart to the T-62: the T-64 served in tank divisions, while the T-62 supported infantry in motor rifle divisions.

The T-64 was a cold war Main Battle Tank, the most sophisticated ever built at that stage in USSR, but which proved too delicate and complex and was limited in production and active units.

It was clear that an entirely new type was needed to match the new generation of Western tanks, and the Soviets decided to back the futuristic design proposed by Alexander Morozov, who had been responsible for the development of the T-34/85 and the T-54/55.

The T-64 was the first Soviet tank to feature an autoloader, allowing a reduction of the crew size by eliminating the need for a loader. This enabled its designers to reduce the overall size of the tank in order to give it a more proficient battlefield silhouette.

The T-64, introduced in the late 1960s, was the first of a sophisticated new family of Soviet main battle tanks developed as successors to the T-54/55/62 family.
