Iraqi-operated many T-62s but it lacked high powered optics, thermal sights and ballistic computers compared to their adversaries in the Gulf War. The Iraqi 3rd Armoured Division alone lost about a hundred T-62 tanks, while no Abrams or Challengers were lost to enemy fire.

The highly-successful T-62 was supplied to 23 countries around the world. It was used by the Iraqis in the First and Second Gulf Wars, and by the Soviet Union in the invasion of Czechoslovakia and the war in Afghanistan (1979 – 1988).

Citing evidence at a repair facility near the Taji Military Base, the Russian newspaper said the T-62 tank is being worked on so that it can be reintroduced into the Iraqi Armed Forces.
