The Type 74 (74式戦車, nana-yon-shiki-sensha) was a main battle tank (MBT) of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). It was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as a supplement to the earlier Type 61.

Adjusted for the time and possibilities of industry in the early 1970s, this tank can be safely called the “Armata” of its time. The promising main battle tank (MBT) T-74 was designed in Kharkov at the famous Malyshev factory on an initiative basis.

The Type 74 fires its Royal Ordnance L7 105mm main armament. The turret was cast, low and wide, with a characteristic turtleback shape, round at the front but narrow at the rear. The mantlet was partly internal (shaped as the front part of the turret).

One Type 74 MBT in each company is fitted with a dozer blade. Main armament consists of a 105 mm rifled tank gun which fires the standard range of ammunition including APDS-T and HESH-T.
