Personally, I now avoid AE as my first choice Lottie animator for exactly the reason it can't do something as simple as import a simple SVG.

May 14, 2021 · When those plots are saved as a SVG and then imported into Illustrator - half (if not more) of the information is lost. My current workaround is to save it as a PDF which is much easier to edit on Illustrator after 'releasing the mask', it's just time-consuming and tedious.

Nov 4, 2019 · SVG is not a native file format, but still you can export it as you can with several other non-native file formats. Same goes for importing. Reading and writing SVG in Illustrator has several known issues. The W3C validator will notify you of the issues with the file. Maybe Inkscape can open it. But maybe you have to get back to the customer.
