The Super Pit One of Australia’s largest open pit gold mines. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Operation is a world class asset located adjacent to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder approximately 600 kilometres east of Perth, Western Australia.

The vast underground network of historical workings throughout the Golden Mile has shaped the way the Super Pit has been mined during the past 30 years. Mining methods have also been governed by the proximity of the Super Pit to Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

KCGM – The Super Pit . Did you know the Super Pit is so big it can be seen from space? It is 3.6km long, 1.5km wide and over 500m deep.

One of the most popular attractions in the Goldfields, the Super Pit Lookout draws thousands of locals and tourists each year. The opportunity to view a working mine site in action and the chance of watching a blast keep the Lookout firmly on the local must do list.

Northern Star Resources (Northern Star) is currently preparing for a growth project at KCGM Operations called ‘Fimiston South’, commencing at the southern end of the Fimiston Open (Super Pit) in 2023.

Fimiston Open Pit, stockpiles and Mt Charlotte Underground. More than 13 million tonnes of ore per annum is processed through the Fimiston Processing Plant. Approximately 13 million tonnes of (dry solid) tailings are currently produced annually from processing operations and deposited across various TSFs.

The Super Pit remains in an interesting life cycle phase as it pushes forward with its proposed expansion of the mine while continuing its consultation around mine closure, which is now expected in 2021.
