The Kennebec River: A Sea-run Fish for Every Season
Atlantic sturgeon: The largest sea-run fish in eastern North America. Atlantic sturgeon may reach 800 pounds, 12 feet long and live for 50 years or more. They spawn in the Kennebec River in late June and July at age 15 or older. Adults live along the continental shelf at depths of over 600 feet.
Populations of Atlantic sturgeon and shortnose sturgeon currently inhabit the Kennebec complex in Maine, which encompasses the Kennebec River, Androscoggin River, Sheepscot River, Sasanoa River, Back River, Hockomock Bay, Montsweag Bay, and Knubble Bay (Figure 1).

The coastwide Atlantic sturgeon population is made up of five distinct population segments (DPSs): (1) Gulf of Maine (GOM), (2) New York Bight, (3) Chesapeake Bay, (4) Carolina, and (5) South Atlantic. In Maine, the best places to see sturgeon are in the Androscoggin, Kennebec, and Penobscot rivers.
