Steyr's first truck was the Typ III, presented in 1920. Steyr built traditional bonneted trucks in the post war years. In 1968 the distinctive cab over Steyr 90 series was introduced. This was followed by the 91 and the 92 series, built until MAN took over Steyr's truck production in 1990.

The modernized Steyr 91 series replaced the "90" beginning in 1978. It was now of a tilt-cab design (not for the lighter models) and received a plastic grille and front bumper. The cabin was better insulated, and thus quieter and warmer than earlier models.

For the Steyr Plus trucks of the Mode Series 91, new 6-cylinder diesel engines have been developed. Thanks to these engines it is possible to cover several output ranges with units of identical overall dimensions.

While the older Steyr 680 had already been manufactured since 1959 (and as a military version since 1967), the Steyr 91 M was a very fresh truck at that time. The 680 production ceased in 1984, but the new type 91 M could be sold well in Arabia, Canada and other countries.
