The Saurer 4K 4FA is an Austrian armoured personnel carrier with caterpillar tracks. It was later replaced by the Steyr 4K 7FA G 127 . It went into production in 1961.

When Steyr Daimler-Puch bought the line in 1970, they produced a similar but updated 4K 7FA series that contained many of the internal components of the SK 105 light tank/tank destroyer. The resulting design is a viable, versatile, and widely recognized production line for armored personnel carriers for the Austrian Army and some global allies.

The Austrian 4K 4FA APC was built by Steyr with sloped armor, low profile and all-steel welded construction in the 1960s. It was replaced by the 7FA.

The Steyr 4F 7FA G127 armoured personnel carrier is a continuation of the development of the older 4K 4FA G1/G2. It has improved armour protection, a more powerful power unit and an upgraded transmission.

In mid-1999, the Austrian MoD awarded Steyr-Daimler-Puch a contract for the supply of 112 Ulan infantry fighting vehicles for the Austrian Army. These were delivered from 2002 to 2004 and has now replaced at least part of the current Saurer 4K 4FA APC fleet of the Austrian Army.

Steyr would fit the 4K 7FA with up to three firing ports per side, depending upon the customer. Austrian, Greek, and Cypriot 4K 7FAs generally have two firing ports on each side, while Nigerian and Bolivian 4K 7FAs have none.

Feb 2, 2004 · In addition to Austrian Army use, the 4K 7FA was produced in Greece under license (and called the Leonidas by the Greek Army), and exported to Nigeria and Cyprus, with an additional six 4K 7FAs being bought by Bolivia and ten by Macedonia.
