0000 Steel wool for cleaning leading out of rifle bore?
Jan 12, 2016 · That steel wool wont do anything down in the grooves anyhow. You need heavy duty digging power from a brush. And seriously, try the 'cork and fill' method with some basic bore cleaner overnight. Or get some foaming cleaner that will fill the bore. Soaking will help much more than steel wool. Btw, I dont think the 0000 wool would do much to a bore.
I thought steel wool was supposed to burn hot?
Jan 3, 2021 · Steel wool burns because the iron rusts, and the fibers are so thin that it rusts extremely fast once started. The fibers can't dissipate heat, like a block of iron can (knife, etc.). Essentially it is instant rust, which is exactly what happens when you strike carbon steel on a flint; the tiny specks of metal shaved off haven't had a chance to ...
Steel Wool as Tinder - Bushcraft USA Forums
Jan 12, 2012 · I used steel wool for one of my Bushclass tinders. It was difficult to light with the fire steel, but It did light, and it got HOT! I could never get the 9volt to light steel wool. It never seemed to do much of anything to the steel, and after seeing what it took to get the wool lit with a ferro rod, I am a bit skeptical.
Mufflers repacking - S/S or fiberglass or both - Adventure Rider
Feb 24, 2010 · Well, yes I remember burning steel wool attached to a wire and spinning it when I was a kid! There must be a good reason for its use in mufflers. Higher quality mufflers have a layer or two of stainless steel wool or mat around the perforated core then a SS mesh to wrap it all. SS supposed to tolerate higher temp (1200 C) than fiber glass.
tips for packing muffler - Adventure Rider
Nov 25, 2007 · I've used stainless steel wool. Actually industrial stainless steel scourers. Normal steel wool just burns nicely. Works O.K., but you really want a layer of fibreglass mat around the outside to keep the surface temps sane. You need to pack them really tight and it'll be louder than glass - the good news, cheap enough and easy to handle at ...
what is the best muffler packing? - Adventure Rider
Nov 25, 2007 · Stainless steel wool doesn't have anywhere near the attenuation of fiberglass. Of course packing density and fiber diameter have an effect but in general the above is true. The baffled mufflers won't have the same attenuation of high frequencies so they can potentially sound harsher than the typical "glass pack".
Alternative muffler packing? - Adventure Rider
Aug 2, 2005 · Yeah - if you don't believe Sir Not, try this experiment. Take a nice piece of fresh new steel wool and a good 9V battery. Now stick the leads form that 9V battery into the steel wool! But first, wear some leather gloves or something other wise you are likely to get burned!! (AMHIK) This is not an urban myth, well it kind of is.

How can a muffler be quieted? - Adventure Rider
Oct 28, 2004 · Fiberglass or basalt wool will do a MUCH better job at attenuating sound than stainless steel wool, especially at higher frequencies. About the only good use for stainless wool in a muffler is to wrap a thin layer around the perf tube so the fiberglass won't blow out. Otherwise, it pretty much sucks compared to 'glass.
