St Aidan's has been transformed from an old, open cast mine to a reserve that's alive with wildlife. Its relatively small size means you can easily explore a rich variety of habitats including reedbeds, wetlands, meadows and woodland.

The level, circular walks around our trails makes St Aidan's the perfect place for a stroll in nature with a pushchair. You and the little ones can spot ducks on the pools, taking in the stunning views across the reserve and fresh air as you go.

St Aidan's is a 355 hectare (877 acres) nature park located between Leeds and Castleford [1] in West Yorkshire, England. The land was formerly an opencast coal mining area that was flooded in 1988, after the riverbank collapsed.

Feb 4, 2025 · Part of the wider string of sites along the Lower Aire Valley known as Swillington Ings, St Aidan's is the newest RSPB site opened to the public on 25th May 2013. The 400ha site includes large areas of reedbed, wet grassland, open water, islands and pasture.

Managed by the RSPB, St Aidans is an incredible spot for birdwatching and walking. Since it’s transformation from an open cast mine to a nature reserve, St Aidans has become a haven for birds and wildlife who nestle amongst reedbeds, lakes, woodlands and open pastures.

St Aidan's is a perfect place to get close to nature and relax, unwind or exercise in a stress-free environment. Just outside Leeds on the banks of the River Aire, it's a big new space to walk, run, cycle, or ride your horse and enjoy the wildlife that surrounds you.
