Spike tomahawks (casse-têtes) are thought to have originated from early ship boarding axes which closely resemble them except for the iron strapping on the sides of the handle. As with the other types of tomahawks, the terminology varied with the times & the places.

This Iroquois tomahawk has the typical early spike except it is finished squarish instead, 3/8" x 0.5". This is the only one I've seen with this kind of blunt poll instead of a point. It appears to be original to the piece & not broken.

This beautiful spike tomahawk below was recently found by metal detector by Kevin Hughey of St. Ignace MI. near the old Fort Du Buade of the 1600's era.
