The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1954 and 1959. The GP9 succeeded the GP7 as the second model of EMD's General Purpose (GP) line, [1] incorporating a new sixteen- cylinder engine which generated 1,750 horsepower (1.30 MW). [2]

Starting in 1970 with #3424 all existing GP9's were rebuilt into GP9E's and GP9R's with the number series beginning at #3300. Because of the internal differences of the three 'Phases', different 'rebuild' schemes were required, so they were placed into different number series.

Yes, a GP9 is 1750 horsepower but the S.P. rounded it up for the classification system. When the 3189 (3005) emerged from the S.P.'s GRIP (General Rehabilitaion and Improvement Program) in 1977, it's classification was changed from EP418-3 to EF418-R1.
