They were used with SSW GP30's on run through freights between California and Texas. They remained as built until retired, except for SSW #5001, which was the 'prototype' for a rebuilding program, that was deemed uneconomical. #5001, was partially rebuilt in 1976, and was to become GP30E 5020.

Feb 20, 2025 · The GP30 was EMD's first to feature the now-common pointed, low, short hood. This design became EMD's standard until the FRA mandated the wide "safety" cab on every new locomotive in the 1990s. Interestingly, the GP30 abandoned EMD's brief attempt at attributing horsepower rating to the model name.

SSW 5004 is an EMD GP30, SP Class EF423C-1. Reportedly: SSW 5004 was built in 1963 by EMD as a model GP30, builders number 5650-05 28176, SSW 754, SSW Class Z-22. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP SSW 5004 SP Class EF423C-1. The disposition of this locomotive is, retired 1986 & sold.
