There is one surviving SP&S 2-8-2 "Mikado" type locomotive. It is number 539, former NP number 1762 that was transferred to the SP&S. This locomotive was retired from the SP&S and is currently stored at Grand Canyon Railway in Williams, AZ.

2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives in the USA
The first 2-8-0 was built by Matthias Baldwin in 1866. The locomotive was named "Consolidation" in honor of the recent consolidation of the Beaver Meadow, Penn Haven & White Haven and Lehigh & Mahanoy railroads into the Lehigh Valley. The Consolidation became the principal hauler on most main lines.

Very typical of a turn-of-the-century 2-8-0, this design was rated at 960 gross tons "of cars and lading" on a 1% grade, 500 on a 2% incline, and 220 up a 4% grade. By 1904, the EP&NE had been taken into the El Paso & Southwestern, where they were renumbered.

There are three surviving NKP 2-8-2 "Mikado" type locomotives. Number 624 is on display at the Civic Center in Hammond, IN, number 639 is on display at Miller Park in Bloomington, IL and number 587, which is operational at the Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville, IN.

Twenty years later, just as the SP was converting the system to standard gauge, the area was hit by the 18 April 1906 earthquake that led to the levelling of most of downtown San Francisco. This delayed the transfer of 13 to the Nevada & California until October.
