Thanks to requests from railroads, EMD’s engineering staff began work on a longer six-axle version, the SD7, with the additional two axles with traction motors providing more tractive effort as well as improved weight distribution, a Special Duty diesel-electric locomotive ideal for use in heavy duty, low-speed service.

Dec 3, 2024 · Built by EMD as Milwaukee Road SD7 #2209 (6/1952), renumbered to MILW #509. Rebuilt and upgraded to SD10 standards (1975) and renumbered to MILW #534, then to SOO #534.

Most of the Milwaukee Roads SD10s were sold to the DM&E, but three were retained by the Soo. The 534 is on lease to the DM&E leading a Northbound on the C&NW. This former Milwaukee Road units gets some heavy repair work done.

Chicago Milwaukee St Paul & Pacific EMD SD7 Diesels
Electro-Motive SD7 Locomotives 2200, Class 15E-RS6, was built in April 1952, #15612. It was renumbered 500 in 1959 and rebuilt at West Milwaukee in July 1974 as 559, Class 18E-RS6 .
