4 days ago · The Soo Line rostered 45 GP9 locomotives, delivered between 1954 and 1957 as part of an order of EMD, Alco, and FM locomotives to complete the dieselization of the railroad. The GP9 fleet included 15 units equipped for passenger service, supplementing 14 previously delivered FP7 locomotives to completely dieselize passenger service.

Soo Line EMD GP 9 No. 558
Soo #558 was the only GP9 painted in the "hockey stick" paint scheme more typical of GP38-2s and other later power. Sold to I&M Rail Link in April, 1997 and re-numbered IMRL #125, then to Progressive Rail Services as PRSX #125.
Soo Line EMD GP 9 Ph I No. 406
GP9 #406 was a freight unit in its original paint scheme. Note in the larger view that the "wings" on the end don't connect as on the ends of #2555. This is commonly believed to be a paint shop mistake by EMD, as was #404.

Jun 1, 2023 · GP9 550 was the guinea pig for the new livery. In 1962 two new Alco RS27s in the bright colors arrived. They were followed in 1963 by 22 EMD GP30s, which rode on trucks from Soo’s 22 traded-in Alco FAs. Later came 10 GP35s, 4 GP40s, and in 1968, 10 GE U30Cs.
