She was "Smoky," an eight-month-old Yorkshire Terrier found abandoned in a foxhole in New Guinea in February 1944. She was adopted by Corporal Bill Wynne, who quickly discovered that the little dog was uncommonly adventurous, tough, and smart. Smoky learned over 200 commands and hand signals.
