The Smackover Formation has been a prolific source of petroleum. The 1922 discovery of the Smackover oil field , after which the Smackover Formation is named, resulted in a sizeable oil boom in southern Arkansas.

Aug 1, 2018 · Many of the Smackover Field oil wells came in at over 50,000 barrels of oil a day, and one, the #1 Burton, gauged at 74,500 barrels a day. At the peak of the boom Arkansas was one of the leading oil producing states in the nation.

The Smackover Oil Field was discovered on April 14, 1922. The J.T. Murphy well drilled by Oil Operators Trust, reached the Upper Cretaceous Nacatoch sand at a depth of 2,024 feet (617 m), part of the Norphlet dome. Within a year, almost 1,000 wells had produced 25 million barrels of oil.

Jul 19, 2023 · Smackover’s existence is a result of one of the largest and most dramatic oil discoveries in the nation. Its sixty-eight-square-mile oil field led the nation’s oil output in 1925, with production reaching seventy million barrels.

Oil was first discovered in the Jurassic Smackover when a "deep" test was drilled in the shallow Smackover Field in Union County, Arkansas in 1937. With that notable discovery, the Smackover became one of the most sought-after Jurassic objectives in the Gulf Coast.

Jan 5, 2025 · The oil-producing area of the Smackover field covered more than 25,000 acres. By 1925, it had become the largest-producing oil site in the world. The field will produce 583 million barrels of oil by 2001.

Although most of crude oil was extracted from stripper wells that produced less than 10 barrels per day in the south Arkansas, Arkansas has two giant oil-producing fields. The Smackover field, discovered in 1922, produced 606,627,681 barrels of crude oil as of 2016.

The Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W.

For those wanting to see an active oil field, the museum's staff has prepared maps for either 6- or 15-mile driving tours of the 40-acre Smackover Field that reveals remnants of early production, such as salt flats.
