Pilot Rock's name comes from the fact that this prominent landmark once guided gold miners, trappers, and pioneers toward a pass in the Siskiyou Mountains. Oregon's last known grizzly bear was shot near Pilot Rock in 1891.

The rock feels the full force of ocean gales and the lighthouse took 1 1/2 years to construct, with the workers often enduring miserable conditions. The lighthouse began operating in January, 1881, and was eventually decommissioned in 1957, a team of four keepers maintaining 24-hour operations until then.

Segment 4 of the North Fork Trail passes below the rock and, since this stretch of trail ends with an unmaintained dead end, Buffalo Rock is a good place to turn back.
