Mar 7, 2017 · Playing something like a Skald is pretty much a matter of roleplay and your background. Take a background that gives you a suitable tool (musical instrument) proficiency. As for getting into the thick of it and fighting with an Axe, I would probably go for Barbarian or a Battlemaster (or Champion).
