Five people with full ski gear/bags is definitely a rental car challenge. The major car rental agencies (Hertz, Avis, etc.) do have ski racks available for rent. But you also need to consider baggage. A full-size SUV, like a Tahoe, would probably work. A smaller SUV like an Escape, Traverse, etc. would definitely not work.
