Although kishimoto may not be actively involve in the story, the story is still based from his original draft and no doubt everything (even before volume 14) need to be greenlight by kishimoto himself.

Plus when the village was getting attacked by Orochimaru, Shikamaru was fake sleeping letting people die. Exuding bloodlust through his shadow which them transform into a demonic figure to intimidate opponents and absolutely consuming weak opponents and their chakra.
