The Shadow team updated Tony Southgate's DN9 design for 1979 as the Shadow DN9B. Drivers Jan Lammers and Elio de Angelis tried hard, but the car was no longer competitive.

The Shadow DN9 was a Formula One car used by the Shadow team during the 1978 and 1979 Formula One seasons. It is most famous for having been copied by the new Arrows team for their FA1 . Arrows, formed by a disgruntled group of Shadow's staffers, were in the end prohibited from using the design.

The Shadow DN9 was designed by Tony Southgate for the 1978 season but he did not finish it because he left for the new Arrows team. The DN9 was later developed by John Baldwin, and became the car involved in the famous "spy-story" Nicholson-Southgate-Shadow-Arrows.

A 'wing car' based on the concept of the Lotus 78, the Shadow DN9 was designed in late 1977 by Tony Southgate before he left for Arrows. The DN9 only scored a handful of points in 1978. Southgate also designed the virtually identical Arrows FA1 for his new team, which was banned after a court case.

This is the Shadow DN9, as raced in the 1978 F1 season. It was a poor year mainly because of the defection of most of the key staff. Drivers Stuck and Regazzoni finished fifth once. A DN9B was used in the first halve of the 1979 season.
