The Shabbat before the start of a Jewish month (Rosh Chodesh) is known as Shabbat Mevarchim, “the Shabbat when we bless.” On this day, we recite a special blessing for the new month and announce the date(s) of Rosh Chodesh during the synagogue service.

Any Shabbat that precedes and begins the week during which there will be a day or days of a new Hebrew month (Rosh Chodesh) is known as Shabbat Mevarchim (mevarchim means "they [the congregation] bless" [the forthcoming new month].")

Shabbos Mevarchim is the name given to the Shabbos before each Rosh Chodesh. This Shabbos is called "Mevarchim" (blessing) because on this Shabbat, before Mussaf prayer, the Jewish people bless the upcoming month with a special blessing established by the Geonim.

Jul 6, 2010 · There is an ancient custom to bless the upcoming Jewish month on the Shabbat which precedes Rosh Chodesh. These Shabbatot when the new month is blessed are referred to as “Shabbat Mevarchim†. A central feature of this prayer is the public announcement of the exact time the new moon, known as the “molad†, is set to appear.[1]

Aside from a Jewish month being a period of time and part of the year, it has a very special significance to the Jewish People in particular.
