Der Setra S 8 wurde im April 1951 der Öffentlichkeit auf der IAA in Frankfurt am Main vorgestellt. Die Typbezeichnung bezog sich dabei auf die in diesem Omnibus vorhandenen acht Sitzreihen. Zur Verfügung standen somit 35 Sitzplätze und 7 Mittelgangsitze sowie ein Sitz für den Fahrer.

1951 war dann der erste Omnibus dieses neuen Typs fertig und konnte unter der Bezeichnung „SETRA Typ S 8“ vorgestellt werden. Die Bezeichnung SETRA leitete sich ab von SElbstTRAgend und die Typenbezeichnung bezog sich auf die 8 Sitzreihen, über die das Fahrzeug verfügte.

Aufbauend auf dem Erfolgsmodell S8 entwickelte Kässbohrer den S6, einen Kompaktbus, der 1955 auf dem Genfer Automobilsalon erstmals präsentiert wurde. Nicht nur seine kompakte Bauweise machte ihn zum Publikumsliebling und Verkaufshit.

Die Fahrversuche und Messungen bestätigten die Erwartungen und die Fahreigenschaften stellten alles Bisherige in den Schatten. So wurde dann 1951 der erste "SETRA Typ S8", die Bezeichnung hatte er aufgrund seiner 8 Sitzreihen erhalten, vorgestellt.
