Sericite is grungy-looking fine-grained stuff that commonly replaces feldspars. Close examination of sericite reveals that at least some of it is fine-grained white mica. Because it is generally made up of very small crystals, its birefringence is irregular and generally low.

Sericite is name given to very fine, ragged grains and aggregates of white mica – usually muscovite – produced by the alteration of feldspars or other minerals. Included grains of zircon or other radioactive minerals may form pale pleochroic halos in surrounding muscovite.

These rocks are formed by crushing and shearing with only minor recrystallization. If there are no conspicuous directional features, the rock is called "crush breccia" if coarse grained and "cataclasite" if fine grained. Most of them, however, are foliate.
Mafic rocks consist mainly of clinopyroxene and plagioclase (labradorite) with accessory orthopyroxene, olivine, hornblende and biotite. Typical alteration products of these primary phases are chlorite, sericite (fine-grained muscovite), talc, serpentine, amphibole and mica.
