Apr 12, 2006 · The proper way to write with mute in Italian is " con sordina". Without mute is "senza sordina". Nobody says "sord" in Italian. These are the standard markings. I don't know why an American composer would write instructions using unfamiliar instructions in Italian in addition to using "sord" instead of sordina? Why not just use proper English?
