Batis maritima, the saltwort or beachwort (also known as turtleweed, pickleweed, barilla, planta de sal, camphire, herbe-à-crâbes, and akulikuli-kai[2]), is a halophyte. It is a C3 -plant, long-lived perennial, dioecious, succulent shrub.

The common skate (Dipturus batis), also known as the blue skate, is the largest skate in the world, attaining a length of up to 2.85 m (9 ft 4 in). Historically, it was one of the most abundant skates in the northeast Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Dipturus batis has been recorded at sites all over the UK which vary from very sheltered to very exposed (see adult distribution) and anyway can swim to deeper areas if wave action increases to the extent that oscillatory movements on the seabed become excessive.

Range: In the Northeast Atlantic, it's present from Iceland and the northern North Sea around to the western British Isles and Celtic Sea. The Blue Skate generally has a more southerly distribution than the Flapper Skate.
