Schiøtz tonometer is an indentation tonometer, used to measure the intraocular pressure (IOP) by measuring the depth produced on the surface of the cornea by a load of a known weight. The indentation of corneal surface is related to the IOP. The Schiotz tonometer consists of a curved footplate which is placed on the cornea of a supine patient.

Although raised intraocular pressure (IOP) is not the only sign of glaucoma, the IOP should be checked routinely on all adults attending eye care facilities. Applanation tonometry (as described in Issue 64, December 2007) is the most accurate method to measure IOP, but Schiötz tonometry is also a useful screening test.

Mechanical instruments designed for this purpose were first introduced in the latter part of the 19 th century, but did not gain traction until the introduction of the Schiøtz tonometer in 1905. This report reviews details about this instrument, its inventor and its role in glaucoma treatment.

The Schiotz tonometer consists of a curved footplate which is placed on the cornea of a supine subject. A weighted plunger attached to the footplate sinks into the cornea in an amount that is indirectly proportional to the pressure in the eye.

Hjalmar August Schiøtz (9 February 1850 – 8 December 1927) was a Norwegian physician, ophthalmologist and educator. Schiøtz is credited as being Norway's first professor of ophthalmology. [1] He was born in Stavanger, Norway.
