May 12, 2023 · In the mid-2000s, as the Global War on Terror escalated, U.S. Special Operations Command sought to replace the M4 carbine with a more robust weapon. The solicitation was dubbed the Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle program. SOCOM wanted a light SCAR-L and heavy SCAR-H chambered in 5.56x45mm and 7.62x51mm, respectively.

The MK 16 Mod 0 SCAR-L is a relatively new 5.56mm x 45mm carbine / assault rifle that has been selected by SOCOM to replace a number of existing weapons such as the M4A1 and the CQBR. The MK 16 can be configured with a 14 inch barrel (standard), with a 10 inch barrel (CQC) or with a 18 inch barrel (LB).

Unique to the FN SCAR 16S is the cold hammer-forged MIL-SPEC, free-floating barrel with chrome-lined bore and chamber.
