The origin of wedding vows can be traced back to ancient times, with the Book of Common Prayer by Thomas Cranmer playing a significant role in shaping the traditional vows used in many religious ceremonies today.

It was noticed above that the "gifta", or formal surrender of the bride, who thus passed from the "mund" of her father or guardian to that of her husband, was regarded as the most essential feature of Anglo-Saxon nuptials. This left its mark in the Sarum rite, and something of it still survives both in the Anglican and the Catholic ceremonial.
