Sa’i (Arabic: السعي) is one of the integral rites of Hajj and Umrah and refers to the ritual of walking back and forth seven times between the two small hills of Safa and Marwa, located adjacent to the Kaaba in Masjid al-Haram.

Performing Sa’i is the fourth compulsory rite of Hajj or Umrah. Muslims are obligated to perform Sa’i after the completion of Tawaf and its prayers. Based on Islamic history, the act of Sa’i is a commemoration of a mother’s sacrifice for her son.

Sa’ee in Hajj depends on the type of Hajj one wish to perform. If one undertakes to perform Tamattu or Qiraan Hajj which is preceded by an Umrah, then Sa’ee will be performed as part of the Umrah. Sa’ee is performed again as part of Hajj after Tawaaf-e-Ziyaarah which is done after pelting the Jamaaraat (Shaytaan) on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah.
