As the Zero fired on the capsized Oklahoma, Boreen saw many sailors on the exposed torpedo blister killed by the enemy fire. Boren swam to the USS Maryland (BB-46) and climbed aboard. There, he was cleaned up and given fresh clothes and coffee.

Following my 18th birthday I enlisted in the United States Navy on August 3, 1938, as a Seaman Recruit. After completion of three months of Recruit Training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois, I was assigned to the Battleship USS OKLAHOMA (BB-37).
