As the Zero fired on the capsized Oklahoma, Boreen saw many sailors on the exposed torpedo blister killed by the enemy fire. Boren swam to the USS Maryland (BB-46) and climbed aboard. There, he was cleaned up and given fresh clothes and coffee.
