"The Sacred War", [a] also known as "Arise, Great Country!", [b] [citation needed] is one of the most famous Soviet songs of World War II. The music is by Alexander Alexandrov, founder of the Alexandrov Ensemble and the musical composer of the State Anthem of the Soviet Union. The lyrics are by Vasily Lebedev-Kumach. [1]

The Sacred Wars can refer to several wars over control of Delphi: First Sacred War (595 BC - 585 BC), between the Amphictyonic League of Delphi and the city of Kirrha. Second Sacred War (449 BC - 448 BC), an indirect confrontation between Athens and Sparta.

The Third Sacred War (356–346 BC) was fought between the forces of the Delphic Amphictyonic League, principally represented by Thebes, and latterly by Philip II of Macedon, and the Phocians.

The war has switched sides, Germany was on the defensive, getting their tales handed to them as the Reds broke through the German lines. The war was now, to the Reds, theirs to win. It was their sacred war now.

The song refers to World War II, defenses on Moscow, the rising partisan soldiers, and the fighting willpower.
