Based on the Hawker Audax, with modifications to meet South African requirements (to Specification 22/34) for a close-support aircraft. Four built by Hawker (first flight June 28, 1935) and 65 more were built under licence at the Aircraft and Artillery Depot at Roberts Heights.

The Audax was a development of the Hart for the Army co-operation role, with a reduced bomb load and a message pick-up hook added. 82 were received by the SAAF for use with the Service Flying Training Schools.

Sep 16, 2014 · The Hawker Hartebeest was a South African built light bomber based on the Audax army-cooperation aeroplane, itself a variant of the well known Hart bomber. 65 were built, some of which saw action in WW2 against Italian forces during the East African campaign, while flying with 11sqn SAAF and based in Nairobi.
