SP received their first GP9's for freight service (#5604-5621) beginning January of 1955. These 'Phase II' GP9's also debuted the trademark -- classic! -- SP five light package both front and rear, the passenger GP's had the large dual purpose 'Ash can' or 'beer barrel' signal light.

The Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway (SP&S) used a combination of new and used locomotives. For more information see the SP&S Historical Society Resources. [1] Most of these locomotives were purchased or leased from the SP&S's parent roads Great Northern Railway and Northern Pacific Railway.

BN GP9 1975 was built in June 1956 as the SP&S #150. A long time purchaser of Alco road power SP&S ordered 6 EMD GP9's and all six were delivered in June of 1956 and numbered 150-155. So the SP&S 150, later to become the BN 1975 was the first of the GP9's SP&S ordered.

A nice early BN trio with ex SP&S GP9 1980, ex NP F9B 831 and ex GN GP9 1820 at Centralia WA, Mar 1971. 1980 was the highest number GP9 on BN's 280+ unit GP9 roster.

Starting in 1970 with #3424 all existing GP9's were rebuilt into GP9E's and GP9R's with the number series beginning at #3300. Because of the internal differences of the three 'Phases', different 'rebuild' schemes were required, so they were placed into different number series.
