The Valour class is a class of frigates built for the South African Navy. Part of the MEKO family of warships, the German shipbuilder Blohm+Voss officially designate the class as the MEKO A-200SAN. [3]

This is a list of active South African Navy ships. As of 2023, there are approximately 49 ships in commission including: 4 frigates, 3 submarines, 2 minesweepers, 1 replenishment vessel, 1 survey vessel, 5 tugboats and 33 patrol vessels.

From 1962 to 1964, the South African Navy received three British-built Type 12M frigates which formed the Presiden-class : SAS President Kruger, SAS President Steyn and SAS President Pretorius respectively. [22]

Mar 2, 2023 · The defence budget allocation states that the SA Navy will defend and protect South Africa and its maritime zone by providing three frigates, one combat support vessel (the SAS Drakensberg), two offshore patrol vessels, and three inshore patrol vessels per year as well as two submarines a year.

Jan 20, 2025 · The South African Navy’s Valour-class frigate SAS Amatola has embarked on a maritime security patrol as part of Operation Corona, aimed at safeguarding the country’s borders. The frigate arrived at Gqeberha Port (Port Elizabeth) on 7 January, with mission readiness training conducted on 9 January before commencing its patrol mission.

SAS Amatola (F145) is the first of four Valour-class frigates for the South African Navy by the European South African Corvette Consortium. Amatola, in keeping with a naming convention depicting acts of valour, was named after the Amatola mountain range in the Eastern Cape area where British forces fought the Xhosa nation in late 1852.
