Help me remember all pre-Voodoo PC 3D accelerators.
Aug 14, 2006 · Virge 325 and VX supported trilinear, Voodoo didn't. But Voodoo had much better 16bit rendering due to 24bit rendering -> 16bit dithering -> 4x1 postprocessing. I don't think Voodoo (Glide) had worse IQ than Virge (S3 API).

Nov 22, 2002 · Diamond (S3 Virge) had superior features compared to Mystique and actually I was pretty much happy with it (dropped few jaws to floor with S3d accelerated Terminal Velocity and Descent II) until christmas 1996, when MikroBitti (biggest and propably oldest computer mag in finland) had huuuuge 3D-card review and my glorious card got to last place.
Did Anybody Here Program for Virge? | Beyond3D Forum
Dec 18, 2004 · I've been doing a lot of thinking about the "olden days", since I've been messing a lot with a little K6 system. I was wondering if anyone here would have any first hand experience working with a Virge. Now that it's been, oh, a few years since those "glory" days, I was hoping I …

Dec 27, 2023 · @jacilore maybe it's trying to detect vram seeing some huge number like 4gb (cards at the time had 12-16mb max) and the buffer used to store that number is overflowing or freaking out in some way (like the way you could clock some arcade games) try limiting your vram to 8 - 16mb maybe it's not detecting your 3d card and reverting to software rendering (if it is detecting it try the software ...

Dec 10, 2022 · There were S3D (that's for S3 Virge IIRC), Rendition's V1000, ATI Rage 3D, etc. and there were far from "a few months" because Glide was first released along with Voodoo Graphics on PC which was around 1995. The first Direct3D …
Texture cache of the N64 vs. that of Playstation
Jul 25, 2018 · As for N64 vs PC of 96, I really wonder how S3 Virge compares. I've played some S3 S3D games and they run not unlike the speed of a N64 game and the detail levels aren't dissimilar really. Rendition Verite is probably superior to N64. PC had such a mess with proprietary APIs back then though. It was all too experimental yet.

Feb 22, 2021 · Only two proper 3D accelerator cards were widely available by late 1996, S3 ViRGE (Diamond Stealth3D) and Rendition Verite V1000 (Creative 3D Blaster), which ran at measly 20-25 fps. OTOH, Voodoo Graphics ran at 60+ fps and used 'multi-texturing' which was only supported in Glide at the time, so 3dfx came to dominate the entire year 1997.

Sep 6, 2023 · There are few 'native' Direct3D 2.0/3.0 titles, since most games from that era have been updated with subsequent game patches to use Direct3D 5.0 DrawPrimitive and Direct3D 6.x vertex buffers and texture stages, and even 'competing' APIs like Glide and miniGL/OpenGL, so they could make a better use of emerging 3D rendering hardware like 3dfx ...
