The first S160 locomotive arrived in Britain in November 1942. The first 43 locomotives were transferred to the LNER works at Doncaster for completion, and later running in which resulted in them hauling local trains on the East Coast Main Line.

These locomotives were a standard design used by the US Army Transportation Corps (USATC), and shipped to Britain during World War 2 in large numbers ready for the Invasion of France in 1944. Prior to the invasion, they were used by all four of Britain's main railway companies, including the LNER.

Built-in America and shipped to the UK and mainland Europe, the S160 design principles were for quick manufacture, minimal maintenance requirements and an anticipated short life span. Many of the technical features of this class of locomotive were to have a long-lasting effect on the future designs of British steam engines.

As compared to its Pershing sire, the S160 featured a higher-mounted boiler, allowing a larger firebox with a grate area increased from 32.7 to 41 square feet.
