The Sea Guard or Sea Guardian helicopter was created to fill a need for a fully amphibious small helicopter. The design began in 1957 as the S-62A (later designated HH-52A), using the rotor and transmission from the S-55 and a single turbo shaft and fuselage similar to the H-3 (S-61) Sea King. The first prototype flew in May of 1958.

It served 24 Coast Guard air stations in the United States. Backed by the mighty SP-5B Marlin, this HH-52 was taken on strength by the USCG in 1963 and served at several different Coast Guard Air Stations before retirement to the museum in 1987.

Crashed into the Pacific Ocean 400 miles off the coast of Acapulco Mexico while operating from the Coast Guard Cutter Rush in 1987. All 4 crew members survived, but it sank and was left on the ocean floor. Last noted derelict at Elizabeth City, NC in 1994. Scrapped.
