S/PDIF can carry two channels of uncompressed PCM audio or compressed 5.1 surround sound (such as DTS audio codec or Dolby Digital codec); it cannot support lossless surround formats that require greater bandwidth.

Jan 7, 2008 · Hard to say. DTS is 1.5Mbs if I recall, and that makes it the highest bitrate I know of over S/PDIF. There's also DTS 96/24, but I assume it has the same max of 1.5Mbs. It does't so much matter what the theoretical bittate is over S/PDIF, because it could be higher. The real world max bitrate is determined by what the associated standards are.

Jul 14, 2008 · I played Stargate (Blu Ray), which also has a DTS-HD MA track. My amp said it was receiving DTS-ES Discrete 6.1. So, the other post was right about receiving the core track over S/PDIF, not the entire lossless HD audio stream. BW

Jan 22, 2007 · Optical has a much higher bandwidth, but the optical Toslink connectors on audio products are converted from the signal that gets sent over a coaxial digital audio cable, so if anything will have more jitter and other problems due to the conversion to optical and back.

Feb 25, 2016 · S/PDIF doesn't officially support DD+ or DTrueHD, so that's never gonna happen. But as for S/PDIF Bitsreamed DD to S/PDIF PCM, the cheapest option might just be to plug one of these into whatever device it is. (most devices with S/PDIF input also have an RCA input) BTW, giving background info on your situation helps other AVSers help you.
