Like the Hopi, Rotumans value hard work and harmonious social relations, but the imposition of a commercial economy, increased mobility, access to mass media, and associated changes have combined to erode the sense of community that once characterized social life on the island.

Using 360-degree photography, interactive digital design and storytelling, this project will take website visitors on a virtual tour of Rotuma with interactive insights into cultural heritage, Rotuman wisdom, Rotuman language, geographic & ecological highlights, and personal stories.

This confounding of racial categories gave Rotumans, if not a relatively privileged place in the hierarchy of non-European ethnic groups, at least some latitude for proving their worth, which they did through education and hard work, soon acquiring a reputation for responsibility and honesty.

In this paper, we explore an example of relatively weak cultural identity, the Rotuman case, and discuss the factors that facilitate its strength or render it weak. Rotuman cultural identity must be understood in an historical context that begins with the island’s relative isolation.

Chiefs also make speeches in order to inspire their subjects to work hard, to donate food or money to a cause, or to promote community harmony. Two other arenas for speech-making are community meetings and the Methodist Church.

Rotumans have earned a reputation for diligence, responsibility and hard work. They have achieved extraordinary success within the education system of Fiji and are considerably over-represented in professional, managerial and skilled occupations within Fiji.

Today, the people of Rotuma are working hard to remember and celebrate their culture. There is a growing effort to bring back the Rotuman language and traditional practices, allowing the community to reconnect with its roots.
