Ropen is a cryptid that is said to inhabit the Indonesian Papua province and the nation of Papua New Guinea. The creature is often described as a large bat or a pterosaur, and is said to produce a light, possibly to attract fish.

The ropen is the subject of folklore (like a man but also like a spirit) but it's believed by some natives to be a real animal. Descriptions vary, but it is often said to be batlike, and Giant bats belonging to the megabat suborder, Megachiroptera, are the largest bats in the world.

May 6, 2021 · Locals have reported sightings of a creature they call Duwas or Ropen. With a wingspan said to be up to 29 feet, the dark-gray flyer possesses two leathery, bat-like wings and a long tail with a diamond-shape on the end.

The correct word is not "duah" but "duwas" and it means "ropen." It appears to be a non-extinct long-tailed pterosaur.

Those who have searched for a large nocturnal flying creature in Papua New Guinea call it by the name known on Umboi Island: “ropen.” With hundreds of cultures and languages in Papua New Guinea, a real creature should have different names in different cultures.

Many report the glow of the flying creature, which lasts about five or six seconds, but few natives have gotten a good view of the ropen. The exceptions include Jonah Jim, Jonathan Ragu, Wesley Koro, Mesa Augustin, and Gideon Koro. Investigators believe the ropen is a long-tailed animal.
