When it came to hunting bears, a crossguard was attached beneath the rohatyn’s blade, preventing the bear from climbing on the weapon by grabbing onto this part.

Rohatyna to jedna z najstarszych broni myśliwskich, wywodząca się z średniowiecznych włóczni. Jej nazwa pochodzi od charakterystycznego grota zaopatrzonego w wystający z boku hak-róg lub poprzeczkę, służące do przytrzymywania ofiary i uniemożliwiania jej ucieczki.

Rohatyn to centrum rejonowe w obwodzie iwanofrankiwskim położone nad rzeką Gniłą Lipą. Miasto znajduje się w odległości 61 km od Iwano-Frankiwska i 69 km od Lwowa. W przeszłości położenie miasta było bardzo korzystne z punktu widzenia obronności. Od północy i zachodu miasto chroniła rzeka Gniła Lipa, od strony wschodniej zaś potok i fortyfikacje.
