For 112 kilometres (70 mi), the river forms part of the border between Spain and Portugal, in a region of narrow canyons. It formed a historical barrier to invasions, creating a cultural/linguistic divide.

Xisto (schist) is a thinly layered rock, ranging in colors from the warmest ochre to the darkest gray, makes a striking change from the pale uniformity of the surrounding granite, a rock formed from the cooling of vast subterranean chambers of hot liquid magma.

Created in 1998, it is one of the most recent natural parks in Portugal and covers an area of 85,150 hectares of protected area. In this area the Douro River flows through deep gorges carved in the rocks, the Douro cliffs.
