Chicago-based artist Robyn Day uses photography and all of its inherent complexity as a vehicle to explore and engage with queerness: identity, gender, sexuality, culture, and community. The work is conceptually driven and often attempts to subvert or reinforce perceptions about the nature of photography.

In Nobody Knows That You Are Gay, photographer Robyn Day conjures an “imagined archive” of queer visual history. Her work defies easy classification: it is part documentary, in the mode of the 1950s Fire Island party photographs in the Cherry Grove Archives Collection, and part rhapsodic study, redolent of the work of Minor White.

Layering, scraping, scratching, and crinkling photographs, and modifying their surfaces with ink, charcoal, pigments, boiling water or ice, Day reworks images as they develop and after, representing queer history by intentionally obfuscating it.

Robyn Day is a San Francisco-based photographer and former arts critic at Photograph, Art New England and The ARTery at WBUR, Boston's NPR news station. In 2017, she graduated from the photography MFA program at Columbia College Chicago, where she received the Graduate Merit Award and the Stuart Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship.
